What Is Type 1 Diabetes?

A graduate of Battleground Academy in Franklin, Tennessee, Brad Lasher is currently pursuing a bachelor of science in marketing and management at Oklahoma State University. Throughout his high school and undergraduate career, Brad Lasher has logged more than 80 hours of community service, over half of them with the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation.

For more than 45 years, the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation (JDRF) has raised awareness and funded research into type 1 diabetes, which affects millions of children and adults around the world. Type 1 diabetes is a metabolic disease wherein the pancreas does not produce sufficient insulin, resulting in the body’s inability to regulate blood sugar levels.

Living with type 1 diabetes requires the careful monitoring of glucose levels, as well as daily injections of insulin. Individuals with type 1 diabetes must also manage diet, incorporating nutritious, high-fiber foods, and implement exercise habits to help regulate blood sugar levels. While there is no known cause or cure for type 1 diabetes, organizations such as JDRF have raised more than $414 million in 2019 alone to fund life-improving breakthroughs.
